The process to obtain Mexican nationality can be done from the United States. Know what the process is like and what documents you need.
The Political Constitution of the United Mexican States indicates that all children born abroad to a Mexican father and / or mother are Mexican and have the right to nationality. Mexico allows dual nationalities, in such a way that it is possible, for example, to have Mexican and US citizenship simultaneously. Therefore, it does not imply the loss of rights and obligations as citizens of the United States.
The procedures to obtain Mexican nationality can vary depending on where the children and their parents are. If a person with access to nationality does not register as a Mexican citizen while living in the United States, upon entering Mexico he will only have permission to stay six months as a tourist.
Having Mexican nationality will provide you access to public services in Mexico, this without losing your citizenship of origin. The benefits of having dual citizenship are many, such as job opportunities, the right to education, medical care, pensions, and more.
For the registration of the Mexican nationality of a girl or a boy, from the United States the procedure will be through the nearest Mexican Consulate. Enter Mexitel to schedule an appointment: https://mexitel.sre.gob.mx/
For this it is necessary:
- A prior appointment at the closest Mexican Consulate.
- Mother and father must present their identity documentation with photo.
- If the parents are married, only one of them should be present with the marriage certificate.
- If they are divorced, a birth certificate is required and, in the event of the death of one of the parents, the corresponding death certificate.
- Original Mexican birth certificate of the parents, who are Mexican.
- US birth certificate in long version of the daughter or son (the surnames of both parents must match on the birth certificate).
- Photo identification of the daughter or son for whom the registration will be made.
- Two witnesses over 18 years of age with photo identification.
When they go to the appointment, they will not receive a Mexican birth certificate, but a registration certificate that has the same legal effect. It is basically a birth certificate that bears the stamp "Service Abroad to Mexicans."
Registration is free, however, certified copies of the registration certificate cost around $ 13 USD each.
