The new consular registration

A consular registration is a document issued by the Consulates of Mexico around the world and that proves the Mexican nationality of the bearer.

Officially called the High Security Consular Registration Certificate, it is a public document that serves as proof of Mexican nationality and identity abroad, especially for immigrants in the United States and Canada.

To obtain the Consular Registration, it is necessary to prove Mexican nationality through a Mexican passport, birth certificate, naturalization letter, among other documents. To start the process, you can make an appointment online. Or schedule an appointment at your nearest consulate by phone.

In addition to being a proof document of nationality and identity, the Consular Registration is important for certain procedures with the US government. For example, in the Departments of Motor Vehicles (DMV) in states where undocumented immigrants can apply for a driver's license, where the license plate is part of the required recommendation.

Recently, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) announced the creation of the third generation Consular Registration. As explained by the SRE, it is a document with greater security elements, more inclusive and with new technology.

The new consular registration for minors will include data on the bearer's fathers, mothers or guardians and with an X option for the gender box.

Since this month of June, the new consular registration is available at the Mexican consulates in the United States, Spain and Costa Rica.
