The Summer Meals Program, or Summer Food Service Program, is an initiative that ensures that school-age children continue to receive nutritious meals during the summer holidays.
The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) is a federally funded and state-run program that ensures that school-age children continue to receive nutritious meals even during summer vacation.
Through the program, providers who serve free healthy meals to children and teens in low-income areas are reimbursed during the months that school is closed for the summer. Beneficiaries of the children and adolescents program up to 18 years of age.
The SFSP works through three main groups, the State Agencies that establish contact with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the sponsors, such as non-profit community or religious organizations with the capacity to manage the program and the places where they are installed, such as parks, clinics, hospitals, community centers, schools, among others.
