Generally, driver's licenses issued in Mexico are valid for driving your own or rented car in the United States.
The Ministry of Foreign Relations (SRE) explains that Mexican driver's licenses are valid in the United States for 30 days after entering the country. After the first 30 days it will be necessary to have an International Driving Permit (IDP), issued by US authorities.
However, each state has its own rules, some accept the IDP, or it may be the case that they do not even accept licenses from certain states of the Mexican Republic. In California, for example, after the initial 30 days, you need to obtain a state license in order to drive.
Depending on the state you are traveling to, we recommend that you check the information on foreign drivers at the state Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).
For example, to rent a car in some states the valid foreign driver's license must be sufficient to meet that requirement, however, in other states the IDP may be necessary.
