This center was created by the Indigenous Front of Binational Organizations, with the aim of making migrant indigenous communities visible, recognizing their economic, labor and cultural contribution.
The Binational Center for Oaxacan Indigenous Development (CBDIO) offers its services to indigenous communities of Oaxacan or indigenous origin in California. In addition, it develops education and training projects, provides advice and guidance on migration issues.
The CBDIO opens its doors to immigrant indigenous communities of Tlapaneco, Triqui origin, and speakers of Nahuatl, Mixtec, Zapotec, among other native languages. After more than 27 years of work, they continue to work to achieve self-determination for migrant indigenous communities. Thanks to training and strategies, the CBDIO has promoted the civic participation of the community.
In addition, the CBDIO has programs in various locations in California. For example, in the city of Fresno they have a program for indigenous interpreters and cultural sensitivity courses.
Or the Xi'na Navali or Children First program, which seeks the integration of children from zero to five years of age to educational and health services in different locations such as Greenfield and Fresno. Similarly, in Fresno they carry out cultural promotion activities such as the Guelaguetza California.
On the other hand, the center is promoting a scholarship for indigenous immigrants. The San Martin Indigenous Immigrant Scholarship Fund (SMI Scholarship), provides the opportunity to study university to indigenous immigrants, offering from 150 to 400 dollars per month to cover the fees.
