The H-2B visa program offers temporary jobs to foreigners in non-agricultural jobs such as landscaping, construction, cleaning, and hospitality.
The H-2B visa program focuses on offering jobs to foreign immigrants, especially when US companies do not have enough trained workforce in the country. These job openings are trade-focused and do not require academic degrees.
Jobs are generally offered in landscaping, cleaning, construction and hospitality. However, in some states they offer jobs as waiters, factory workers, animal handlers, or forestry workers.
The United States Department of Labor (DOL) explains that the foreign workforce provides landscaping services in homes and businesses throughout the country, as well as being important to complement the workforce in the industry.
A DOL report shows that the states that granted the most H-2B visas in 2019:
- Texas – 15,252 visas
- Colorado – 6,672 visas
- Florida – 5,319 visas
- Pensilvania – 4,923 visas
- Carolina del Norte – 4,792 visas
- Luisiana – 4,684 visas
- Nueva York – 4,344 visas
- Alaska – 4,330 visas
- Virginia – 4,053 visas
- Maryland – 3,887 visas
Texas visas represented more than 12% of the national total. On the other hand, gardening work represented a little more than 51% of the visas, for a total of 62,675 visa workers.
