Dreamers create mentoring program for DACA and TPS recipients

Dacademy was created to provide advice and support to the community of beneficiaries of Deferred Action (DACA) and Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and to generate a support network.

Dorian Canales, one of the founders of Dacademy was born in Honduras and brought to the United States in 2005 when he was just seven years old, he is currently a DACA beneficiary and a banking analyst.

Canales applied for DACA in 2012, the same year it was implemented by the Obama administration, and recalls the hurdles he faced entering college years later. “When I was in school I had to try and fail many times. I had to figure out a lot of things on my own. I was proactive. Fortunately, I was able to get an internship in my third year, albeit a little late. "

It was that situation that encouraged him to found Dacademy along with five other dreamers, a mentoring program for DACA and TPS recipients, focused on academic and professional life.

“We want to offer highly personalized content for people. Those who are having summer internships: we offer them content that will separate you from other interns, with the aim of securing a full-time job offer, how to secure a summer internship the following year ”, explained Canales.

Orlando Gil, another of the founders of Dacademy, also came to the United States at the age of seven, but in 2003. In 2012, thanks to DACA, he was able to start working to help his parents pay the bills. "In hindsight, if I had someone show me the ropes of what it's like to go from nothing to something, and then turn it into your next opportunity, I think it would have helped me multiply by ten what I have now," he explained.

Dacademy currently has ten mentors and ten students, and they look to continue to grow over time.
