OBRA Collective, is an interdisciplinary art group based in Charlotte, North Carolina, that is made up of Latino, immigrant, and undocumented, as well as allied artists.
In 2013, after meeting Latino artists who were part of a migrant caravan that traveled across the United States promoting immigration reform, Charlotte artists decided to form a local Latino and immigrant artist collective. This is how OBRA Collective was born, as a group of Latino and immigrant artists and activists.
The goal of this collective of artists is to create art that celebrates and raises awareness of Latino and immigrant culture. This summer, OBRA Collective will host a series of three graffiti workshops, which will explore the history of graffiti, art classes, and a lesson on can control.
All materials will be provided by OBRA Collective and the cost of the individual workshops is 10 dollars, or the three workshops for 25.
The first of the workshops was held on June 18. The second will take place on July 16 and its objective is for artists in training to develop their own style of graffiti. August 20 will be the last workshop in this series, and its purpose is for participants to learn about graffiti techniques.
All the workshops will be held at the VAPA Center, where the OBRA Collective gallery is installed. In addition, the workshops are focused on people of all ages, who speak Spanish and/or English.
