The 39th annual conference of the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) was held June 23-25 in Chicago.
The Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris attended the NALEO annual conference, and during her participation she addressed various topics such as inflation, immigration, public health and reproductive rights.
He recognized as priorities the need to reduce costs for families, build a fair and humane immigration system, and protect the population from gun violence.
In November, elections will be held in which Congress will be at stake and the opportunity to approve reforms and bills that benefit immigrants. NALEO estimates that more than 11 million Hispanics and Latinos will vote in the upcoming elections, which will play a crucial role for the Biden-Harris administration.
During her speech, the vice president explained that the United States will face a period with high inflation rates and that one of the reasons is the lack of a path to citizenship for the millions of undocumented immigrants. Harris specifically referred to Dreamers, farmworkers and people with Temporary Protected Status (TPS).
“I believe that anyone should be able to have a dream and achieve it. A future where immigrants have the opportunity to have what they deserve in terms of a path to citizenship,” explained Harris.
In this sense, the vice president acknowledged that there is still a long way to go to fix and improve the immigration system, especially for Dreamers.
