USCIS Must Fast Track Processing of Thousands of Green Cards Before the End of Fiscal Year 2022

The Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) has more than thousands of applications for permanent residence or Green Card pending, and must expedite them before the end of fiscal year 2022 on September 30.

The annual cap for employment-based immigrant visas this fiscal year was 280,000, about double the usual, due to delays caused by the pandemic following the closure of consulates and embassies abroad. In this way, nearly 140,000 family-sponsored visas were not delivered or used during fiscal year 2021.

This means that USCIS will issue approximately 280,000 employment-based visas this fiscal year, as family-based visas that were not used at the end of fiscal year 2021 moved into the current fiscal year.

It should be noted that last year 66,781 employment-based visas were not used in fiscal year 2021. Therefore, this year USCIS and the Department of State (DOS) seek to redouble efforts to deliver as many Green Cards as possible.

Through the end of June 2022, DOS and USCIS had used 176,281 employment-based immigrant visas. Therefore, they now aim in the short term to take advantage of feasible policies and actions to maximize the use of all available visas for the fiscal year.

In this way, USCIS is identifying and contacting applicants who have not filed their I-693 form and thus facilitating and speeding up the process before the end of fiscal year 2022.

The form that USCIS requires to complete the process can only be signed by a medical professional authorized by the agency, so applicants must take this into account. Likewise, the document will be valid for six months, so if the waiting time to appear for an interview is prolonged for more than the established time, it will lose validity.
