How to obtain U.S. citizenship by naturalization

Obtaining US citizenship by naturalization requires a series of steps such as knowing eligibility, filling out the corresponding forms and accrediting a civic and English test.

The first step to begin the Naturalization process is determining eligibility to obtain US citizenship. Eligible are those people at least 18 years of age, who have been permanent residents for at least 5 years (or 3 years if married to a US citizen).

Other requirements are to have residency and continuous and verifiable physical presence in the United States, to speak and read basic English.

The next step is to read the N-400 form available at the following link: https://www.uscis.gov/n-400.

If you reside outside the United States, when filling out the N-400 form, you must take two passport-style photographs. Subsequently, you must prepare the documents that demonstrate your eligibility for naturalization, such as the Green Card. Green Card holders.

Then you must send the N-400 form, and the corresponding documents according to your case. After submitting, you will be able to check the status of your application on the uscis.gov

Subsequently, you must attend the appointment to have your biometric data recorded, that is, taking fingerprints and photographs. Days later you will receive a notice for the appointment of the naturalization interview.

During the interview, USCIS agents will question you about your answers on the N-400 form. Then you will apply the civic and English test. The response time by the USCIS officers depends on the particular situations of each applicant.

After receiving a response from the USCIS regarding the decision of your application, whether it is granted or denied.
