US government plans to offer ID to undocumented immigrants

The government of Joe Biden raises the possibility of giving temporary identifications to unauthorized immigrants who await the final decision in their migration cases, asylum seekers, among others.

The White House plans to provide identification cards or ID cards to undocumented immigrants awaiting a decision on the regularization of their immigration status. Many immigrants do not have valid identification, which makes it difficult to access health services, transportation or housing.

The government is considering the implementation of a pilot program that can address this situation, which would have an approximate budget of 10 million dollars. However, the details of how the pilot will work have not yet been presented, nor has the process to register.

The plan on its financing was approved by members of Congress under the name of "ICE Secure Docket Card program" as part of fiscal year 2023. In this sense, it would be a project by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service or ICE.

The identifications would be given to migrants who are not in detention centers and immigrants without legal status who are in a court process for the elimination of their irregular immigration status.

The identification would contain a photograph, data such as date of birth and security measures to prevent counterfeiting. It could also contain a QR code that would redirect to a mobile app for users to access court information and documents.

In this way, ICE seeks to modernize the methods of presenting documents for non-citizens. Likewise, the Biden administration continues to make changes to ICE after changing the criteria and priorities in the detention of undocumented immigrants.
