The administration of President Joe Biden seeks to establish an alliance with non-governmental organizations (NGOs), dedicated to migration and Human Rights issues, to identify migrant families in vulnerable situations in Mexico.
In early 2020, the previous administration established a public health policy called Title 42, which empowers border officials to expel migrants who are on the border between Mexico and the United States. However, currently at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), they are working on a system to identify migrant families and not allow them to be expelled from the United States.
"We are working to simplify a system and to identify and legally prosecute particularly vulnerable individuals who warrant humanitarian exceptions under the order," said Sarah Peck, a DHS spokeswoman.
In addition, he recognized the work carried out by NGOs in Mexico and other international organizations: “This humanitarian exception process implies close coordination with international and non-governmental organizations in Mexico and tests for covid-19 before those identified through this process can enter the country".
Lee Gelerent, lawyer in the litigation over this public health order, explained that Title 42 has a humanitarian exception for especially vulnerable people and that, thanks to the work of global NGOs, the process has worked efficiently.
On the other hand, the policy that forced asylum seekers to remain in Mexico until the moment of appearing in an immigration court in the United States, has been modified during the current administration, in the same way thanks to the collaboration of pro-migration organizations .
