The consular registration is an identification document that proves that a Mexican lives abroad.
The consular registration in a document issued by the Consular Offices to Mexicans living abroad, certifies the nationality and identity of a person of Mexican nationality. In addition, it also works as identification before government institutions in Mexico.
Its procedure is simple, the requirements to process it are the following:
- Proof of nationality: Birth certificate or passport.
- Proof of identity: Passport, US driver's license, voter ID, military card, US visa or Green Card.
- Proof of Address: Any bill, correspondence, or package received by mail.

Being an official identification, some banking institutions in the United States accept the consular registration or consular IDs as one of your requirements to open an account. Other requirements usually conclude Social Security Number (SSN) or Personal Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) and proof of address.
Another benefit of the consular registration is that, according to the National Commission for the Protection and Defense of Users of Financial Services (CONDUSEF), it is also a valid document to open a bank account in Mexico. Only proof of address is required where correspondence is received in Mexico.
