The government of Joe Biden announced that during the next months of the year a new regulation will be published to protect the beneficiaries of Deferred Action (DACA).
Alejandro Mayorkas, Secretary of Homeland Security, announced at a press conference that the department is working on new DACA regulations to overcome legal obstacles, which have represented a brake on the protection of dreamers.
“We strongly believe in the program. And we believe that through regulation we can protect and institutionalize the reforms that we have designed for the protection of dreamers”, explained the secretary.
Currently, new DACA applications are not being accepted, after its suspension in July 2021. Therefore, the government continues to work to provide this benefit to more Dreamers.
On the other hand, Mayorkas explained that the priorities for detaining illegal immigrants will change, since the tasks of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) must focus on security. “For the first time, our rules say that the unlawful presence of non-citizens of the United States will not, by itself, be the reason for that person's detention,” he explained.
In this sense, he also pointed out that the DHS is not going to persecute immigrants who have contributed to the community in the United States, and they should not be afraid.
Likewise, Mayorkas spoke about the possibility of immigration reform and the struggle of President Biden's administration. “We remain hopeful and continue to fight for the legislative action this country needs to finally fix a broken system,” he said.
