Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, and other companies filed an amicus brief in support of Deferred Action (DACA).
An amicus brief or amicus curiae, is a term that refers to the presentation of information from a third party, outside a litigation, that seeks to support the resolution of a case in court. In this case Apple and other companies like Amazon, IBM, Microsoft, and more, filed an amicus brief in an appeal case before the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. Previously, Apple had already demonstrated its support for DACA through another amicus brief.
This group of companies seek to exert pressure in the face of the court ruling that in July ruled that the implementation of DACA had been unconstitutional. In the brief, the companies argue that DACA recipients help sustain and boost the economy in the United States.
“DACA recipients have helped fuel and sustain the American economy by filling critical labor shortages, creating new businesses, spending their income on American products and services, and paying taxes. DACA recipients have played a particularly important role as front-line workers responding to the COVID-19 pandemic, ”the document states.
In addition, it also highlights the importance of dreamers in the recovery of the economy during the pandemic, and the importance of DACA workers to fill millions of jobs.
The document ends with estimated data on the effects that a definitive cancellation of DACA could cause: “Invalidating DACA will inflict serious harm on businesses, workers and the American economy as a whole. If the District Court's decision is upheld, approximately 1,700 people will lose their jobs each day, because their DACA status will end. Businesses will lose valuable employees, workers will lose employers and colleagues, and our national GDP will shrink by as much as $ 460 billion. ”
