CO-RCSA, also known as SB251, is a law that allows all Colorado residents to obtain a driver's license, regardless of their immigration status.
Since 2020, the 11 offices of the Colorado Department of Mobile Vehicles (DMV) have processed about 150 thousand licenses to residents of Colorado.
A driver's license is an identification issued by the State that is valid to identify yourself before traffic authorities or police, for example. However, as of October 2021, the SB-251 license will not be valid for boarding a plane.
For undocumented migrants, it is necessary to have one of these documents, passport, consult identification or military identification of your country. This law, passed in 2013, is the product of the struggle of pro-migrant organizations such as the Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition (CIRC). According to the CIRC, the next step is to not allow the DMV to use the personal information that undocumented migrants have provided to issue their driver's license.
