How to process the electronic Mexican passport?

Since October of last year, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) announced the new electronic passport, with new security and authenticity elements.

The new Mexican electronic passport continues to be a physical document, the difference lies in the new security features, which record the entry in migratory pintos, or elements that prevent data theft. For example, the chip that stores information electronically.

In this way, the new document will continue to be printed on physical notebooks, however, it now includes a polycarbonate sheet and a chip where the person's information is stored. The objective of implementing these new measures is to provide greater security to passports.

On the other hand, another of the new changes applies only to passports of minors, which will now have an additional sheet with the data and photograph of the father, mother or guardian of the minor.

The transition to the new passports began at the Foreign Affairs offices in Mexico City and at the Mexican Consulate General in Los Angeles, however, it is now available at all 147 Mexican consulates in North America.

The steps to follow to process the passport are:

  • Identify which passport you are going to process. Passports for three years cost $1,345 pesos, for six years they cost $1,845 pesos and for ten years $2,840.
  • Schedule an appointment online or by phone: https://citas.sre.gob.mx/
  • Make the corresponding payment.
  • Go to the appointment at the consular office and deliver the necessary documents. For renewals, it is necessary to present the previous passport and the payment of rights. And to process it for the first time, the birth certificate, official identification and the payment of rights are necessary.
