California Governor Gavin Newsom announced the pilot program for California college students to earn $10,000 toward their tuition in exchange for a volunteer period.
The Californians For All College Corps program will include 45 universities and community colleges and will accommodate 6,500 students. The program, which will start in the fall of 2022, has an approved budget of 146 million dollars.
“California is a world leader in both higher education and services. The #CaliforniansForAll campus furthers these priorities by connecting Californians from diverse backgrounds with enriching service opportunities across the state.”
All students, regardless of their immigration status, including Deferred Action (DACA) recipients or undocumented students, can enroll in the program.
The volunteering will last 450 hours in organizations dedicated to K-12 education (primary and secondary education), climate action and food insecurity in California, issues related to COVID-19, among others.
In this way, the California government seeks to address one of the biggest problems of young university students in the state, such as student debt. "This program is an invaluable opportunity for our students to not only give back to their communities, but to help prepare the next generation of students," Governor Newsom concluded.
