The interview and civics test is one of the most important steps in obtaining US citizenship through naturalization.
In 2021, one of the last actions of the previous administration was to modify the civics exam to obtain citizenship. The 2021 version of the exam included 128 questions. However, in April 2021, US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) returned to the 2008 version of the exam which has 100 questions.
The interview that includes the civics test to obtain citizenship does not require answering the 100 questions. USCIS asks only 10 random questions, and a minimum of six questions must be answered correctly to pass the exam.
All questions are asked in English and must be answered in English.
In addition to the civics test, naturalization applicants must pass two other tests. An English reading test, which consists of reading one or two English sentences correctly, and a writing test, which requires them to write one to three English sentences correctly.
The questions are related to topics such as the Constitution, the system of government in the United States, public officials, historical figures in the history of the country, historical dates, among others. Some of the questions have multiple correct answers, and others are questions with only one answer.
