The voter credential, issued by the National Electoral Institute (INE) is one of the most important identification documents in Mexico.
The voter card, in addition to allowing citizens to cast their vote even from abroad, also guarantees the bearers' Mexican citizenship. In addition, in Mexico the voter's credential is valid to open bank accounts and after the Mexican passport it is the most important identification document in the country.
However, unlike the Mexican passport or the consular registration, the voter card process is totally free and can also be done from abroad. To process the credential, it is necessary to schedule an appointment through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) system: citas.sre .gob.mx, and go to the corresponding Mexican Consulate.
Likewise, to start the process, it is necessary to present a document that proves Mexican nationality, for example, a birth certificate and for those born abroad, a birth certificate of the father or mother born in Mexico. In the same way, it is necessary to present a valid identification with a photograph such as the Mexican passport, professional license, INAPAM credential, university identification, among others. Finally, a proof of address from the United States is also necessary.
Finally, the credential is sent by courier to the holder's address and then it will be necessary to confirm its receipt so that it is valid to vote to identify themselves. Learn more about this procedure at the following link: https://www.votoextranjero.mx/
