The Temporary Importation of Vehicles is an exclusive service for visitors who enter Mexico by vehicle from abroad.
Since October 2017, by provision of the General Administration of Customs of Mexico, it is necessary to have a Temporary Importation of Vehicles procedure, applicable to Mexican or foreign visitors who enter Mexico with a vehicle.
In this sense, the permit is necessary for Mexicans legally residing abroad and foreign tourists who enter Mexico through a land port of entry in a vehicle of foreign origin.
This procedure is carried out through Banjercito and the necessary documents are the following: Permanent Residence Card or Green Card, Foreign Passport or Passport Card. Likewise, the foreign citizen must present the electronic Pre-authorization (PAE) that is processed on the website of the National Institute of Migration: https://www.inm.gob.mx/sae/publico/pre-autorizacion.html
This procedure can be carried out at the Consulates of Mexico in the United States in the following states:
- Texas: Dallas, Houston y Austin.
- Illinois: Chicago.
- California: Los Ángeles, San Bernardino y Sacramento,
- Arizona: Phoenix.
- Nuevo México: Albuquerque.
- Colorado: Denver.
In the same way, it can be done directly at the Vehicle Import and Temporary Entry Control Modules located at customs at any land entry point into Mexico.
The cost of the permit depends on the model of the vehicle. In this way, the 2007 and later model cars have to pay a fee of 400 dollars; cars model year 2001 to 2006, $300; and 2000 and earlier model year vehicles must pay $200.
The permit will be valid for 180 days after its issuance, and allows exits and entries from the country within said period of time. In other words, a vehicle with a valid permit can leave Mexico and re-enter without needing a new permit.
