A TN Visa allows Canadian and Mexican citizens to obtain a permit to operate professionally in the United States.
The TN visa for Temporary Professionals of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA, for its acronym in English or TMEC in Mexico), is intended for non-immigrants from Canada or Mexico, so that they can dedicate themselves to commercial activities professionally.
Mexican and Canadian citizens eligible to apply for a TN visa must be professional accountants, engineers, lawyers, pharmacists, scientists, or teachers. The full requirements are shown below:
- Be a citizen of Canada or Mexico
- Be a qualified professional under the regulations
- The job position in the United States requires a NAFTA professional
- Have a preliminary agreement with a US employer for a full-time or part-time job (cannot be self-employed)
- Have the qualifications to practice your profession.
In the case of Mexicans, they must first obtain a T Nonimmigrant visa, and later apply for the TN visa directly at the US Embassy or Consulate in Mexico.
