New reform proposal seeks to allow some immigrants to remain in the United States.

Robert Menendez, a senior Democratic senator for New Jersey, explained that Democrats will seek to allow a new path to permanent residency and legalization for certain immigrants such as dreamers, farm workers, essential workers and beneficiaries of temporary protection (TPS).

Robert Menéndez announced on July 15 that the infrastructure plan promoted by the Joe Biden government includes funds of 120 billion dollars for immigration issues.

"It would be 120,000 million dollars for issues related to immigration, that would serve to legalize millions of people, who pay their taxes and it is something that could also have an economic impact," explained the Democratic senator.

This measure would include TPS beneficiaries, dreamers and certain workers. Menéndez explained that "it opens the possibility of an immigration reform of some degree." All this would happen through a reconciliation process, a process that allows the approval of laws only with a simple majority of both houses of the United States Congress.

That is, a path to citizenship could be provided to certain immigrants with only 51 votes in the Senate, where they are currently debating the approval of immigration laws promoted by the Joe Biden government.

In fact, the stimulus package provided by the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 was approved in March of this year using the reconciliation process.
