The Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris, met this Tuesday with the President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador. During the meeting held in Mexico City, they spoke about the need to address migration issues jointly.

The meeting between the leaders launched the promotion of new economic cooperation mechanisms, as well as plans to strengthen foreign investment to Mexico, and mainly, attention to the structural causes that cause migration in the region.

Both governments agreed to seek orderly and safe migration flows, as well as to identify and address the structural causes of migration. This led to the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the two countries: "the governments of the United States and Mexico signed a memorandum of understanding to establish a strategic partnership to address the lack of economic opportunities in northern Central America," explained the House Blanca in a press release.
“The two governments will work together to promote agricultural development and youth empowerment programs in El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala, and will jointly create and manage a partnership program that allows them to better deliver, measure and communicate assistance to the region. ”.

On the other hand, they reported that the High Level Economic Dialogue (DEAN) meeting will be held in September, to seek momentum and investments in the region.

Likewise, the vice president emphasized that the migration problem is due to the current situation in each country, since migrants seek to have a better quality of life and more opportunities in neighboring countries.
On the other hand, Kamala Harris declared that the separation and reunification of minors who have not found their families is a latent problem. She pointed out that it was a cruel decision of the past administration, to separate the children from their parents. However, in the current administration it is a high priority to relocate these children with their parents, although it is difficult, the search will continue.
Hours prior to her visit to Mexico, she was present in Guatemala, where an agreement was established to create a work force against human trafficking and smuggling, for which 40 million dollars will be allocated to support the initiative. Finally, the Central American country will receive 48 million dollars to support affordable housing, agribusiness and entrepreneurs.
