Learn about the process to follow to obtain a replacement for your social security card.
Certain non-citizen workers in the United States can obtain their social security number (SSN), and therefore a Social Security card. However, they cannot access certain tools such as US citizens, such as the My Social Security platform, designed to carry out SSN procedures online, for example, to request a replacement social security card in case of loss.
For a foreign worker who has lost his card to obtain a replacement, it is necessary to verify his identity, age, immigration status, authorization to work among other information through various documents.
To prove your immigration status, work authorization and age before the Social Security offices, it will be necessary to show one of the following documents issued by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in original:
- I-94, Arrival / Departure Report with a valid foreign passport;
- An admission stamp in your valid foreign passport to prove your immigration status and the same passport with a stamp that authorizes you to work.
- I-551, Permanent Resident Card (green card); or
- I-766, Employment Authorization Document (Employment Authorization Card, EAD).
The same documents, except for the admission stamp in the passport, work to prove your identity.
