The 2020 census showed that the United States is experiencing slow population growth, which according to economists in rich countries means lower economic growth. Population growth between 2010 and 2020 was 7.4%, the lowest growth rate since the 1930s.
On the other hand, in some rural communities in the United States, the industry has a growth problem, however, there is an over-supply of jobs. Research has shown that providing faster access to work visas, with a more flexible process, can be one way to tackle the problem.
Immigrants, as Alex Nowrasteh, an immigration policy specialist at the Cato Institute, explains: "They will fill vacant positions and create additional job opportunities for Native Americans, accelerating economic recovery in the process." The specialist emphasizes that immigrants also increase the consumer demand for goods and other services produced in the country.
On the other hand, immigration has kept the United States away from population decline over the years. According to the census projections, immigration will be the main driver of the population in the coming years, even more than births. "Immigration is one of the most viable and rational ways to help respond to this challenge and we know that it will have a really significant impact," explained Danilo Zak, a specialist at the National Immigration Forum.
The possibility of increasing legal immigration in the United States is an option that has the solution to the problem of slow population growth and the oversupply of jobs. The last time the United States had a significant increase in legal immigration was through Immigration Reform in 1986, during the Ronald Reagan administration.
The immigration reform proposed by the Biden-Harris administration aims to create a path to citizenship for more than 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the United States.
Researchers from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania explained that an immigration reform as proposed by President Biden could increase the US population by more than 4% by 2050, increasing birth rates and decreasing the chances of emigration.
