The Alliance of Hispanic Serving Research (HRSU) seeks to double the number of doctoral candidates of Hispanic origin in the United States and increase the number of Hispanic university professors.
Last June, the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) announced the founding of the HSRU Alliance, along with 19 other universities, with the goal of increasing Hispanic representation in academic research. Recently, Texas A&M University announced its addition to this alliance, bringing the number of universities that are now part of the HSRU Alliance to 21.
The purpose of this initiative is to increase the number of students of Hispanic origin in its postgraduate academic programs, as well as increase the number of Hispanic teachers by up to 20% in the next 8 years.
The HSRU Alliance is made up of universities that are part of the top 5% of universities in the country for research. In addition, it includes among its objectives the current situation in the United States, and the demographic changes that the country is going through, for this reason they seek to lead efforts to increase opportunities for communities historically neglected by higher education institutions.
En este sentido, Texas A&M University con sus más de 16 mil estudiantes hispanos, al unirse a esta alianza busca impulsar la carrera académica y de investigación de estudiantes hispanos. “Esta alianza presenta oportunidades únicas para avanzar rápidamente en el avance de la inscripción de estudiantes hispanos en programas de doctorado y ampliar los caminos hacia la cátedra”, comentó la Dra. M. Katherine Banks, presidenta de la Universidad Texas A&M.
In addition, prior to the Texas A&M announcement, the HSRU Alliance has begun work on a $5 million grant project from the Mellon Foundation, which aims to conduct cross-regional research and train students PhD in Latin Humanities. Another initiative by the National Science Foundation, seeking to expand opportunities for Hispanic students in computer science, has also begun to be developed.
